About Ingonish Beach

Ingonish Beach is the best-known beach in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, a 1.5-kilometre stretch of sand where the Highlands meet the Atlantic roughly 432 km — about four and a half hours — from Halifax. Its unusual geography is the headline: the beach sits between the ocean and Freshwater Lake, so on a single visit you can swim in saltwater surf or in still, warmer freshwater a few steps away — a rarity in Nova Scotia and a practical blessing with children. The mountain-meets-ocean setting is dramatic in every direction: the beach is backed by the steep slopes of the national park, and the broad sand flat fills with families on sunny summer days. Expect high crowds in July and August — this is one of the busiest beaches on the island — with free parking, washrooms, change rooms, and picnic tables at hand. Lifeguards supervise daily July 1 through August 30, 10 AM to 6 PM. Water temperatures run about 16°C in July and 18°C in August on the ocean side, warmer in the lake. Wheelchair access is partial and dogs are welcome on leash. The beach is a natural stop on any Cabot Trail itinerary, sitting minutes from the park's eastern entrance at Ingonish.
