Port Maitland Beach is a kilometre-long sandy beach on Nova Scotia's southwest coast, 307 km — around three and a half hours — from Halifax and about half an hour north of Yarmouth. The beach sits inside Port Maitland Beach Provincial Park at the mouth of a river estuary, and its long, clean shoreline with a low-key, uncrowded atmosphere makes it one of the quiet provincial parks on this stretch of the Acadian Shore. Facilities are good for the region: free parking, washrooms, change rooms, and picnic tables. Lifeguards supervise daily July 1 through August 30, 10 AM to 6 PM, which — combined with moderate surf — makes it a reliable family swim spot. Water temperatures reach about 16°C in July and 18°C in August, cooler than the Northumberland but pleasant on a warm afternoon. Crowd levels stay low even in midsummer, and the beach's length means a ten-minute walk puts real distance between you and the parking area. Walking, swimming, and family days are the core uses. Wheelchair access is partial, and dogs are welcome on leash. Port Maitland rewards travellers looping the Yarmouth & Acadian Shores region — particularly those arriving on or departing from the CAT ferry at Yarmouth with time to spare.
