Hike the Highlands Festival

The Hike the Highlands Festival is a seven-day guided hiking festival held every September along the Cabot Trail and across northern Cape Breton. Now in its 23rd year, the festival gathers hikers from across North America and Europe for a week of guided hikes through the Cape Breton Highlands, ranging from gentle coastal strolls to challenging highland ascents. It's one of Atlantic Canada's most beloved fall traditions — a chance to experience the island's famous autumn colours with experienced local guides who know every trail, lookout, and story along the way.

Each day offers a full schedule of guided hikes through Cape Breton Highlands National Park and surrounding areas, with difficulty levels to suit everyone from casual walkers to seasoned backcountry hikers. Evenings bring presentations, music, and community gatherings at the festival headquarters in Ingonish, and the week is bookended by opening and closing ceremonies. Participants can also join the hiker distance award program — logging kilometres throughout the week — and enter the festival photo contest to capture the Highlands at their most colourful. The 3 Peaks Challenge offers an extra goal for those who want to summit three of the region's iconic peaks during the festival.

Registration includes all guided hikes, evening activities, and ceremonies. Festival passes with a Cape Breton Highlands National Park pass included are available for individuals, couples, and families, with daily passes and single-hike options for those with limited time. The festival is based in Ingonish on the eastern side of the Cabot Trail, with accommodation in the village and surrounding communities.
