How the Towns Cluster on the Map

Nova Scotia's towns group into a handful of geographic clusters. Understanding the clusters is the fastest way to plan an efficient route - most trips hit one or two clusters rather than crisscrossing the province.

South Shore

5 towns

South of Halifax along the Lighthouse Route (Hwy 3 / 103).

Cape Breton

2 towns

Northeast, across the Canso Causeway - Cape Breton Island.

Bay of Fundy

2 towns

North of Halifax along the Minas Basin and Fundy shore (Hwy 101).

Annapolis Valley

1 town

West of Halifax along Hwy 101 - wine and farm country.

Northumberland Shore

2 towns

Northeast toward PEI along Hwy 104 - warm-water beaches.

For a single-region deep dive, start with the South Shore guide (Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Peggy's Cove) or the Cabot Trail guide (Baddeck, Cape Breton).

Cities & Towns, Answered

What are the biggest cities in Nova Scotia? Halifax is by far the largest city in Nova Scotia - the Halifax Regional Municipality has a metro population of roughly 465,000, making it the dominant urban centre and the provincial capital. Cape Breton Regional Municipality (including Sydney) is the second-largest urban area. Beyond those two, Nova Scotia is defined by small towns rather than cities: places like Yarmouth (pop. ~6,800), Antigonish (~4,650), Wolfville (~5,050), and Pictou (~3,100) are the next tier of settlement.

Which towns are the best day trips from Halifax? The easiest and most popular day trips from Halifax are Peggy's Cove (45 minutes), Lunenburg (90 minutes), and Mahone Bay (95 minutes) along the South Shore. Wolfville and the Annapolis Valley wine country are about 85 minutes northwest. All four make effortless out-and-back drives and can be combined - for example Lunenburg + Mahone Bay + Peggy's Cove in a single South Shore loop.

Are there any UNESCO towns in Nova Scotia? Yes - Old Town Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized in 1995 for its remarkably preserved 18th-century British colonial town plan and colourful waterfront. It is one of only two urban UNESCO World Heritage Sites in North America. Wolfville is also minutes from the Grand-PrΓ© UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the wider Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve covers Kejimkujik and the surrounding interior.

How many Nova Scotia cities and towns are there? For trip-planning purposes we track 8 distinct regions (Halifax, South Shore, Annapolis Valley, Bay of Fundy, Eastern Shore, Northumberland Shore, Cape Breton, and Lunenburg county) and 12 must-visit towns and cities. The province contains many more small settlements, but these 12 cover the destinations that most travellers visit.
