Quick Facts
History & Description
Cape Sharp Lighthouse stands at the south end of the cape guarding the entrance to Parrsboro Harbour on the Minas Basin. Built in 1886, the tapered square wooden tower with its attached keeper's dwelling rises 35 feet, with the light 60 feet above the powerful Bay of Fundy tides.
The Bay of Fundy records the highest tides in the world, and the light at Cape Sharp has warned mariners of these treacherous waters since the late nineteenth century. A compressed air diaphone fog signal was installed in 1904 and later housed in its own building by 1930. The station was automated in 1989.
Reached by a hiking trail along the Glooscap Trail, the no-longer-operating white tower overlooks a fossil-rich stretch of Cumberland County shoreline named for the Mi'kmaq legendary figure Glooscap.
