History & Description
Carey Point Front Range Light sits on the beach at the outer reaches of the Great Bras d'Or Channel, where the Atlantic meets the entrance to Cape Breton's inland sea. Built in 1972 as a front range light, the white building with its red vertical stripe was automated from the start.
Range lights work in pairs, with mariners aligning the front and rear lights to hold a safe course through the channel. The Great Bras d'Or Channel connects the open Atlantic to the Bras d'Or Lakes, and this light once marked the passage for vessels entering the lakes. No longer in active service, the structure still stands within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
Reached by a short hike from the Cabot Trail, the site rewards visitors with views of the channel where the Atlantic flows into the Bras d'Or Lakes.
