History & Description
The Isaacs Harbour Lighthouse stands near Holly Point on the west entrance to Isaac's Harbour on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. The tower standing today is distinctive: rather than a freestanding tower, it is a red lantern mounted on the roof of a square white keeper's dwelling, rising 42 feet above the shore.
A light was first established here in 1874, a 20-foot square wooden tower with an attached dwelling and red lantern that by 1922 carried a fourth-order dioptric lens showing a group-occulting white light. That first tower was replaced in 1929 by the present dwelling-mounted light, which was later fitted with an electric mercury-vapour lantern by 1990 and fully automated by 1993.
Reached via a short hike along the Marine Drive, the 1929 dwelling-and-lantern still stands today as one of the more unusual lighthouse designs on the Eastern Shore. For many years its keepers sounded a hand fog horn in answer to passing vessels, a practice that continued into the 1960s.
