History & Description
The McNabs Island Rear Range Light was established in 1903 on Battery Point hill on the west side of McNabs Island in Halifax Harbour. It served as a rear range light to guide mariners into Halifax Harbour, working in conjunction with a front range light. The original structure was a square wood tower painted white with a red stripe, mounted on a dwelling.
The light was automated in 1959 and continued operating until it was replaced by a skeleton tower in 1973. The original wooden tower was torn down later that year. Today, only the concrete foundation remains near Military Road on McNabs Island. The island is now a provincial park and is accessible by boat from Halifax.
