History & Description
Pease Island Lighthouse stands on the south side of Pease Island in the Tusket Islands, marking Schooner Passage on Nova Scotia's Yarmouth and Acadian Shore along the Lighthouse Route. The first light here went into operation in 1879, a square wooden tower 42 feet tall painted white with a keeper's dwelling attached, its beam 56 feet above the water; keeper Ranford Malone served here in 1981.
That original tower carried two lights for much of its life, a catatropic upper light and a fixed red lower light roughly 16 feet below it, backed by a hand foghorn. By the 1922 to 1941 period the main light showed a group flashing white light every 20 seconds through a catatropic long-focus lens. The old wooden tower no longer stands.
In 1992 a circular fibreglass tower replaced the second tower on the site; it still stands and is operational, automated and solarized. NSLPS notes it as a good example of a fibreglass tower paired with a concrete equipment building, and because it sits on an offshore island it is best seen from boat trips through the Tusket Islands.
