History & Description
The Stoddart Island (Emerald Isle) Lighthouse stands on Stoddart Island, off Shag Harbour on Nova Scotia's South Shore. It is a square wooden tower painted white, about 21 feet tall, first lit in 1877 and still standing. The light is no longer operational but the tower remains a historic landmark. The light guards the approaches to Shag Harbour and the passage between the island and the mainland along the Lighthouse Route.
From 1922 to 1941 the tower carried a 5th order dioptric lens showing a fixed red light with a hand fog horn, which was answered on signal from vessels until it was discontinued in the mid-1960s. By 1990 the light displayed a flashing green lens. Stoddart Island is reachable only by boat, and the surrounding waters near the famous 1967 Shag Harbour UFO incident make it one of the more storied stops on the South Shore.
