History & Description

The Victoria Beach Lighthouse stands at the narrow entrance to Digby Gut, the channel where the Bay of Fundy's huge tides pour into Annapolis Basin. It is a tapered square wooden tower, about 31 feet tall, painted white, first lit in 1901 and still standing and operational. From here the light watches over one of the most powerful tidal passages in the province.

The tower carried a 7th order dioptric lens from 1922 to 1941 and was served by a fog bell stationed about 1,300 yards to the east, with an alteration recorded in 1951. Automated by 1993, the light now operates unattended. Victoria Beach sits along the Evangeline Trail, and its sweeping view across the gut toward Digby makes it a favourite overlook for travellers watching the Fundy ferry and the reversing waters.
