Lunenburg Waterfront Historic District

The Lunenburg Waterfront Historic District lines the harbour of a town designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for its intact British colonial plan. Wooden wharves still berth working fishing boats beside the red museum buildings, and the uphill streets preserve the 1753 grid of painted heritage houses. The distinctive dormered roofline known as the Lunenburg Bump marks several of the oldest homes.

For the best harbour photos, walk out along the wharves at golden hour when the painted houses glow above the waterline. The classic panorama is from the top of the hill — climb any of the grid streets (Blochouse Hill Road or Zinck Street) and look back toward the waterfront for the postcard view of stacked heritage facades against the harbour. A practical walking route: start at Bluenose Drive, browse the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, then follow the slope uphill through the 1753 street grid to capture the Lunenburg Bump dormered rooflines on the oldest homes. The Salt House on Bluenose Drive and the Grand Banker Bar & Grill are both within a two-minute walk of the marina for lunch or a pint between stops.

The district is part of Old Town Lunenburg, one of only two urban UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nova Scotia. Admission is free, parking at the Fisheries Museum lot is $4, and most visitors spend two to three hours exploring on foot.
