Amos Pewter

Amos Pewter is a working pewter studio and shop on Mahone Bay's Main Street, set inside a squat circa-1880 boathouse that has watched the harbour fill and empty with the tide for well over a century. The business was founded in 1974 and has become one of the South Shore's best-known craft studios, hand-pouring and finishing jewellery, Christmas ornaments, tableware, and custom pieces from lead-free pewter. What sets a visit apart from a typical gallery stop is the open studio: you can stand at the rail and watch craftspeople pour molten pewter into spin-casting moulds, file and polish the raw castings, and hand-finish each piece at the bench. The pewter workshop

The studio's bench workshop is the standout experience and one of the best rain-day activities on the South Shore. In a 45- to 60-minute session you work at the bench alongside an artisan and take a finished pewter piece home the same day — a pendant, a small ornament, or a keepsake depending on the format on offer. Workshops are genuinely family-friendly (children can take part with an adult) and they fill up in peak summer, so booking ahead through the studio's website is a good idea. Mahone Bay as a base

Amos Pewter is the most compelling single reason to stop in Mahone Bay, but the town itself rewards a slower visit — the three churches along the waterfront are one of the most photographed scenes in the province, and the short Main Street is lined with independent shops, galleries, cafes, and the Amos studio's neighbours in the local craft community. You can comfortably spend a half-day here between the pewter workshop, a walk along the harbour, and lunch; pair it with the nearby towns of Lunenburg and Chester for a full South Shore day trip from Halifax, about an hour each way.

Planning your visit

The studio is at 589 Main Street, on the harbour side of the road, with street and public parking within a block or two of the entrance. The shop and studio are open year-round, though hours shift with the seasons — summer days are longest, and shoulder-season and winter hours are more limited, so check the current schedule on the website before a long drive. The main showroom and workshop areas are on a single level and accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
