Clam Harbour Beach is a two-kilometre sweep of sand on the Eastern Shore, 71 km — about an hour — east of Halifax, famous province-wide for its annual Sand Castle Competition, which draws thousands to the dunes on one August Sunday each year. The rest of the summer, the beach inside Clam Harbour Beach Provincial Park settles back into a roomy family destination with warm, shallow water over the flats and rocky headlands to explore at low tide. Facilities are strong for a beach this far out: free parking, washrooms, change rooms, and picnic tables behind the dunes, with a boardwalk crossing to the sand. Lifeguards supervise on weekends only, July 1 through August 30, 10 AM to 6 PM — worth knowing if you are counting on a supervised swim midweek. The surf is moderate and August water temperatures sit around 18°C, with tide pools and rock formations at either end that keep children occupied for hours. Family beach days, walking, and swimming are the core uses, and the beach is one of the few in the region that is fully wheelchair accessible. Crowd levels are medium even on the sand castle weekend, since the beach absorbs people easily. Dogs are welcome on leash. Check the date of the competition before planning a quiet visit — or plan around it deliberately.
