About Rainbow Haven Beach

Rainbow Haven Beach is the closest supervised saltwater beach to downtown Halifax — 19 km, about 25 minutes, via the Cow Bay road — and it earns its family-favourite reputation on facilities as much as sand. A long boardwalk runs from the parking lot across the salt marsh and dunes to more than a kilometre of firm, golden sand at the mouth of Cole Harbour. The beach sits inside Rainbow Haven Beach Provincial Park. Free parking is generous by regional standards, and the park keeps washrooms, change rooms, and picnic tables a short walk from the sand. Lifeguards supervise the main swim area daily from July 1 to August 30, 10 AM to 6 PM, and the surf is usually moderate — enough waves to keep bodyboards interesting, rarely enough to worry strong swimmers inside the flagged zone. August water temperatures around 18°C make it one of the more comfortable swims near the city. The shallow tidal flats at the harbour mouth warm up further and let small children splash well away from any break. Swimming, family beach days, and walking are the core uses; expect high crowds on sunny weekends, when the lot fills by late morning. Dogs are welcome on leash, and access is partially wheelchair accessible via the boardwalk.
