Pomquet Beach is a 1.2-kilometre sandy strand on the Northumberland Strait near the Acadian community of Pomquet, about 214 km — roughly two and a half hours — from Halifax via Antigonish. A boardwalk crosses the coastal dunes from the parking area inside Pomquet Beach Provincial Park, protecting the fragile dune system while giving strollers an easy path toward the sand. The beach sits amid Acadian communities settled in the late 18th century, and the drive in passes through villages where French is still heard in shops and church halls — a cultural backdrop few Nova Scotia beaches can match. The facilities are solid for a park this size: free parking, washrooms, change rooms, and picnic tables. Lifeguards supervise daily July 1 through August 30, 10 AM to 6 PM, which pairs well with the beach's calm surf and family orientation. Water temperatures are the draw on this coast: the shallow strait hits around 19°C in July and 20°C in August — genuinely warm swimming by Atlantic Canadian standards. Crowds are medium even in peak season, spread along a beach that feels bigger than its length. Wheelchair access is partial, and dogs are welcome on leash. Walking, swimming, and family beach days are the core uses; the boardwalk and firm sand at low tide make for an easy afternoon loop.
