Pijinuiskaq Paddle Fest

Pijinuiskaq Paddle Fest returns to downtown Bridgewater on September 19–20, 2026, turning the LaHave River into a colourful gathering of canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Presented in partnership with Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia, the free festival celebrates Bridgewater's connection to the river that runs through its centre — named Pijinuiskaq, the traditional Mi'kmaq word meaning “river of many branches.” It is the paddling companion to the same weekend's Harvest Moon Music Festival, and together the two events anchor the South Shore's fall festival season.

The centrepiece is the Parade of Paddlers, a welcoming group paddle that sets off from Shipyards Landing and follows a gentle route along the river — equally fun for participants and for the spectators who line the banks and the LaHave River walkway. The weekend also includes skill-building clinics and workshops designed to make paddling more accessible to newcomers, the family-friendly Big Canoe Experience, and a closing Pijinuiskaq Mass Paddle on Sunday that gathers the whole flotilla for one last run on the water. Fireworks over the river close out the festival weekend on Saturday night.

Admission is free, and the event is fully accessible-friendly with activities for all ages. Paddlers can bring their own craft or join organized clinics; rentals and guided options have been offered through local outfitters in past editions. The festival is held right in the heart of downtown Bridgewater — steps from King Street's restaurants, the waterfront boardwalk, and the park's amphitheatre, which hosts the Harvest Moon Music Festival's headline concerts the same weekend. For visitors, it's a chance to experience the LaHave River the way locals do: from the water.
