The current Fourchu Head Lighthouse (Fourchu Head II, built 1985) is a circular white fiberglass tower marked with two red bands, still standing and operational as an automated aid-to-navigation on the remote, rugged coast of Richmond County. The original square wooden tower it replaced is described below.
Fourchu Head I was established in 1907 as a square wood tower, white, standing 32 feet high, to mark the entrance to Forchu Harbour on Cape Breton's southeastern shore. The exposed headland took a heavy toll on the wooden tower over the decades, leading to its replacement.
Fourchu Head II (1985), the current structure, is a circular white fiberglass tower with two red bands and no lantern, an automated and solarized aid-to-navigation that remains active today. The site is reachable only by a hike along the coast and is valued for its dramatic ocean views and seabird colonies.
