History & Description
The Gunning Point Island Lighthouse stands on the eastern end of Tanner Island in Mahone Bay, on Nova Scotia's South Shore, overlooking a narrow channel used by local fishermen. The original lighthouse was a 27-foot square wooden tower painted white, one of the smaller harbour lights dotting the bay's many islands.
First established in 1913, the light carried a fifth-order dioptric lens between 1922 and 1941 and operated seasonally from April to January. Its height was raised from 29 to 33 feet between 1962 and 1965 to improve visibility, and it was automated by 1973. In 1990 the wooden tower was replaced by a round fibreglass tower.
Today the site is a quiet feature of Mahone Bay, reached only by boat along the Lighthouse Route. The station's evolution, from a staffed wooden tower to an automated fibreglass aid, mirrors the broader transformation of Nova Scotia's small island lights over the twentieth century.
