Eskasoni Cultural Journeys — Authentic Mi'kmaq Cultural Experiences on Goat Island

Eskasoni Cultural Journeys is a Mi'kmaq-owned and operated cultural tourism experience on Goat Island in Eskasoni First Nation, on the Bras d'Or Lakes UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Cape Breton. Eskasoni is the largest Mi'kmaq community in the world, and the 2.4-kilometre trail on Goat Island is the central visitor experience: a guided or self-guided walk through a series of reconstructed villages, each one offering a different hands-on introduction to Mi'kmaq life — past and present. The experience has been running for more than a decade and has earned recognition from Cape Breton University researchers as one of the top experiential cultural tourism offerings in Canada.

The signature guided tour follows a Mi'kmaq cultural interpreter along the full 2.4 km route. Stops include a smudging ceremony, traditional dance and Pow Wow drumming, demonstrations of basketry, hunting and fishing techniques, conversation with a trading post merchant, and an outdoor cooking demonstration of four cents cake (a traditional pan-fried bread) over an open fire. The walk finishes with a traditional snack of luskinikn (Mi'kmaq bread) and tea. Beyond the main guided tour, Eskasoni Cultural Journeys offers a Medicine Walk focused on natural plants and traditional remedies, a kayak tour of the Bras d'Or shoreline around Goat Island, and a combined Storied Island Trail pass that links Goat Island with Highland Village Museum and the Fortress of Louisbourg for a cross-cultural Cape Breton itinerary.

The on-site gift shop sells work by Mi'kmaq artisans from Eskasoni — dream catchers, jewelry, baskets, and beadwork — and is open to visitors before or after their tour. The whole experience is designed to be genuinely community-led: interpreters are local residents, the food is cooked on site, and the tours run on Mi'kmaq time, with space for questions and conversation rather than a scripted walkthrough.

Tips for Visitors

Book the full Guided Tour rather than the self-guided option if your schedule allows — the smudging ceremony, drumming, and open-fire cooking demonstrations are the experiences that distinguish Goat Island from a self-guided walk, and they only happen with a guide on the route. The Medicine Walk and Kayak Tour run only on specific weekdays, so check the booking calendar early if either is a priority. Bring a card or cash for the gift shop — the artisan work is unique to Eskasoni and difficult to find elsewhere. Allow about three hours for the guided tour including the snack and time in the gift shop. If you are routing through Cape Breton over several days, the Storied Island Trail pass pairs Goat Island with the Highland Village Museum (Gaelic heritage) and the Fortress of Louisbourg (French colonial history) for a deliberate cross-cultural itinerary.
