What to See: Exhibits & Grounds

The park's indoor gallery spaces hold interpretive displays of Mi'kmaw history and culture, including handmade items and cultural materials connected to Membertou and Mi'kmaw heritage. The grounds extend the story outdoors across five acres: reconstructed wigwams, birch bark canoes, and gathering spaces that show how Mi'kmaq families lived, travelled, and came together. Guided Tours & Storytelling

Guided experiences run weekdays by reservation and are the best way to go deeper. A standard Guided Tour (1 to 1.5 hours) covers the exhibits, an introductory video, the Gift Shop, and cultural sharing led by Mi'kmaw guides; depending on availability, tours may include traditional drumming and chanting or a game of Waltes, the traditional Mi'kmaw dice game. The Legends & Storytelling experience (1 to 1.5 hours) brings in a tour guide and sometimes an Elder to share the legends and stories of the Mi'kmaq, often with drumming and chanting. Hands-On Workshops

Workshops turn learning into making, with all supplies included (tea and coffee, too) plus entrance to the exhibits:

• Beading Workshop (2-2.5 hours): make a beaded item by hand while listening to stories and teachings.
• Mi'kmaw Dream Catcher Workshop (2-2.5 hours): craft a dream catcher and learn its origin story, with an introductory video and cultural teachings.
• Moose Hide Hand Drum Making Workshop (3-4 hours; 12-24 hours' notice; groups of 5-15): build a handcrafted hand drum and learn about its origin, use, and teachings.
• Ash Wooden Flowers Workshop (2-2.5 hours; 12-24 hours' notice; groups of 5-15): shape locally crafted ash wooden flowers while hearing stories from the past.
• Ash Basket Making Workshop (3-4 hours; 12-24 hours' notice; groups of 5-15): weave a handcrafted ash basket and learn about its origins and teachings.

Some workshops require advance notice and minimum group sizes, so book ahead by phone and ask what fits your party.

Teachings & Reconciliation Sessions

The park also hosts guided teaching sessions, several available in person or online, popular with workplace cultural learning groups: Taking Care of Our Spirit (emotional wellness), Hand Drum & Chanting, Medicine Wheel Teaching, 7 Sacred Teachings & Perceptions, and Allyship & Reconciliation. Each runs 1 to 1.5 hours and offers a thoughtful introduction to Mi'kmaw spirituality, values, and the practice of reconciliation - a meaningful add-on for teams, schools, and organizations visiting Cape Breton.

Seasonal Programming & Community Events

The park is a focal point for community programming around National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21) and Mi'kmaq History Month (October), when the community marks its heritage with gatherings, sharing, and special programming. October is also Celtic Colours season across Cape Breton, making it an especially rich time to pair a visit with the festival's concerts. Programming calendars change year to year, so call ahead to see what is scheduled during your visit.

The Gift Shop

The park's Gift Shop features Indigenous and Mi'kmaw arts and crafts - traditional and contemporary work, locally and regionally made. It is a welcoming place for a lasting keepsake, and tour and workshop participants get a 10% discount. The shop stocks baskets, beadwork, and gifts suited to holidays and special occasions.
