Halifax Public Gardens
Established in 1867, the Halifax Public Gardens preserve a formal Victorian layout at the corner of Spring Garden Road and South Park Street in the centre of the city. Ornate fountains, carpet bedding, and exotic specimen trees line the gravel paths that loop through the 16-acre site. The gardens close for the winter and reopen in spring, when the bedding plants are reset to the original 19th-century pattern.

The main entrance is at the corner of Spring Garden Road and South Park Street, with three other access gates at the remaining corners (Summer Street and Sackville Street). Hours of Operation
The gates open daily at 8:00 AM, year-round. Closing time is 30 minutes before dusk, so it varies seasonally. The gates begin closing 30 minutes prior to sunset.
Cost & Tours
Admission is completely free; no tickets or bookings are required. To enhance your visit, free guided tours are offered from May 15 through October. These depart daily at 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM, 1:30 PM, and 3:00 PM, with an additional Wednesday evening tour at 6:30 PM. Tours meet at the Friends of the Public Gardens Visitor Information Desk.
Accessibility & Amenities
The gardens are fully accessible, featuring paved pathways throughout. A limited number of wheelchairs are available for loan at Horticultural Hall, where you'll also find accessible public washrooms and beverages for purchase. Please note that there is no dedicated parking lot; only limited street parking is available in the surrounding area.
Essential Visitor Rules
To help preserve this National Historic Site, please adhere to the following rules:
- No walking on the grass (except for the designated Family Lawn by the South-East Gate).
- No pets, bicycles, scooters, or skateboards.
- No jogging or running.
- No feeding the ducks or other wildlife.
- No amplified music.
The Public Gardens reward a slow circuit of the gravel paths, and the free guided tours that run daily from mid-May through October are the best way to understand the Victorian plantings — the gates open at 8 a.m., and the main entrance at Spring Garden Road and South Park Street is the easiest place to start.
