Concrete Creations Sculpture Garden: Ivan Higgins' Concrete World
Behind Cosby's Garden Centre, a plant nursery on Highway 3 just west of Liverpool, is one of Nova Scotia's most surprising free stops: a forest sculpture garden populated entirely by the concrete work of Ivan Higgins. Higgins has owned and operated Cosby's since 1976, and for years his winter tradition has been sculpting inside the greenhouse studio while customers drop in to watch wire and concrete become figures. The garden out back accumulates the results - commissioned memorials, whimsical characters, wildlife, and large commercial pieces like the 9-foot glassblower he created in 2012 for a Cabot Trail gallery.
There is no gate and no admission. You walk through a working garden centre, past the bedding plants, and the sculptures open up around you in a woodland setting. Visitors on Tripadvisor describe it as "a whole world of incredible concrete sculptures in a forest setting" - an accurate summary of what is effectively a self-guided outdoor gallery that changes every year. Higgins' work has been featured in regional media and he is listed on national sculptor directories, but the garden itself remains gloriously uncommercial.
