About Dartmouth Natal Day Festival

The Dartmouth Natal Day Festival is a beloved civic holiday weekend celebration marking Nova Scotia's birthday with a five-day program of family-friendly festivities in Dartmouth, running from late July through the August long weekend. A Natal Day tradition dating back to 1895, the festival centres on the beautiful Lake Banook and downtown Dartmouth, offering a full program of outdoor concerts, sporting events, and community celebrations.

The 2026 festival featured the popular Natal Day Road Race β€” now in its 120th edition and one of Canada's oldest running events β€” dragon boat races on Lake Banook, a grand parade through downtown Dartmouth, live music at the Sullivan's Pond bandshell, and a spectacular fireworks display over the lake. A children's festival, a petting zoo, and food vendors rounded out the family programming.

Natal Day, held on the first Monday of August, celebrates the founding of Halifax and Dartmouth in 1749. The festival's lakeside setting on Lake Banook β€” world-renowned for sprint canoe racing β€” offers beautiful views and ample green space for picnicking between events. The short ferry ride from Halifax to Dartmouth adds a scenic maritime touch to the festivities.
