Margaree Highland Games

The Margaree Highland Games, now in its 13th edition, brought Scottish culture to life in the stunning Margaree River Valley along the Cabot Trail. This three-day celebration blended Scottish, Irish, and Acadian traditions with traditional heavy events, highland dancing, bagpiping, running races, and family-friendly activities set against the backdrop of one of Cape Breton's most beautiful valleys.

Heavy events took place on Sunday, August 9, 2026, featuring the caber toss, hammer throw, and stone put alongside highland dancing competitions and pipe band performances. The games have grown steadily since their founding in 2012, attracting over 2,000 followers on social media and drawing visitors from across the Maritimes and beyond.

Beyond the athletic competitions, attendees enjoyed the warm Cape Breton hospitality for which the Margaree Valley is famous. The area offers excellent salmon fishing on the Margaree River, nearby hiking trails, and proximity to the Cabot Trail's most scenic stretches. The games provide a more intimate alternative to the larger Antigonish Highland Games, with a strong community feel and stunning natural surroundings.
