History & Description

Caribou Lighthouse stands on Caribou Point at the northeastern end of Gull Island, marking the approaches to Caribou Channel on Nova Scotia's Northumberland Shore. The current white square tower with its red lantern sits atop a concrete building and remains a familiar landmark near the ferry terminal linking Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island.

Three lighthouses have served this station over more than a century. The first was built in 1868, replaced by a second tower in 1916, and finally by the present structure between 1968 and 1970. Each generation guided vessels through the Northumberland Strait, the warm waters separating Nova Scotia from Prince Edward Island. The light was automated by 1990 and is owned by the Government of Canada.

Reached by car along the Sunrise Trail, the lighthouse sits close to the Caribou to Wood Islands ferry crossing, making it an easy stop for travellers heading to or from Prince Edward Island.

Photo Tips

Step back from the base to fit the full tower in frame, and let the surrounding shoreline add context to the shot. Fog rolls in quickly on the Atlantic coast, so keep a neutral sky or moody mist as a backup look.
