History & Description
The Pictou Island East End Lighthouse once stood on the southeast point of Pictou Island, marking the eastern approaches through the Northumberland Strait. The original 1853 structure was a square tower attached to a keeper's dwelling; it was replaced in 1930 by a lantern mounted on the roof of a square wooden dwelling. Today the light is no longer standing and no longer operates, having given way to a skeleton tower.
The site's history mirrors the island's hard-pressed maritime past: a fixed white catadioptric lens was installed in 1857, upgraded to a 4th order dioptric flashing lens in 1922, and the structure was finally replaced by a skeleton tower between 1955 and 1962. William Hogg served as keeper here in the 1850s. Pictou Island itself is reached only by private ferry or boat, and the rugged east end rewards visitors who make the crossing along the Sunrise Trail.
