Quick Facts
History & Description
The Pictou Harbour Front Range Light is one of a pair of range lights that have guided vessels into Pictou Harbour since 1889. It is a square wooden tower painted white, standing roughly 27 feet tall on the Northumberland Shore, where the harbour opens out toward the strait and the ferry port of Caribou. Together with its rear companion it forms a lined channel that boats follow in through the entrance.
First lit in 1889, the front tower was altered in 1896, 1909 and again around 1925 as its optics and alignment were refined; by 1922 it carried a catadioptric lens rated at 38 and 65 feet. The light is still standing and operational, automated years ago as part of the province-wide move to unattended aids. It sits along the Sunrise Trail, close to the town of Pictou and the historic Hector Heritage Quay.

At about 27 feet (8 m) tall, it rewards a slightly distant viewpoint that frames the tower against the water and sky. Fog rolls in quickly on the Atlantic coast, so keep a neutral sky or moody mist as a backup look.
