Quick Facts
About South Shore Oktoberfest
South Shore Oktoberfest is a day-long celebration of Lunenburg's German heritage, held on the historic waterfront on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The town was founded by German, Swiss, and French settlers in 1753, and the festival leans into that lineage with a beer garden, local food vendors plating up sausages and pretzels alongside Nova Scotia seafood, live music through the afternoon and into the evening, and family activities on the wharf. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is more small-town street party than Munich tent city.
The 2026 food vendor lineup reads like a Lunenburg who's-who: the Old Fish Factory at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, Salt Shaker Deli, Hodge Podge, and Dory Mates Seafood & Cafe all turn out with Oktoberfest-leaning specials alongside their usual menus. The beer garden pours regional craft beer and a proper Oktoberfest MΓ€rzen or two, and the live music program keeps the waterfront hopping from late morning through the evening, with German folk tunes mixing in with East Coast fiddle and rock.
Family activities run through the afternoon β face painting, lawn games, and kid-friendly crafts near the waterfront β and the whole festival unfolds within easy walking distance of Lunenburg's UNESCO-recognized Old Town, with its colourful historic buildings and working waterfront. Free admission makes it an easy add-on to a South Shore day trip from Halifax (about an hour each way) or a stop on a longer Lighthouse Route road trip. Pair it with a walk out to the Lunenburg lighthouse or a late-afternoon dinner reservation in town, since the restaurants fill up fast on festival day.
